The result of a long search for a maker from whom we can commission consistent, reasonably-priced period bass bows - we are extremely proud to present these Brazilian-made pernambuco baroque style bows. Though it's now common to see a variety of possibly historic designs from Chinese makers, we have not previously succeeded in obtaining consistent quality bows made to performers' specifications, and we are extremely pleased to be in collaboration with makers in Brazil, one of the bow-making centers of the world. It's long been a mission at Quantum Bass Center to make period bass bows more accessible, and it's finally beginning to happen with the receipt of this model.
Designed to play either overhand (like a French bow) or underhand (like German bow), they are appropriate for players trained in either bow. Very thoughtfully designed and well made, with a handmade frog (open channel) and handmade ebony button. Since these traditional designs pre-date metal fittings, there is no ferrule, slide, or underliner, and thus they weigh less than the average modern bow - under 110 grams (and are 27 1/2 inches long). However, with the design specific of a straight stick or slightly negative camber, and the strength of the pernambuco sticks, they still draw as full and open a sound as a heavier bow, with the ease and breathiness of the baroque-style articulation we're seeking.
Each one has a slightly different character. Shipments contain a variety of frog shapes, round and octagonal sticks. We are leaving it to the maker to fashion each bow to the final shape he considers most functional, since there is no standard in this type of bow. Each one has been play-tested by one of our staff who has considerable experience in baroque bass playing and baroque bows. They each have impressive performance, and the price for this quality of pernambuco bow in a specialized design is nothing short of phenomenal. If you have a preference in the style of stick, please indicate when making your purchase, and we'll do our best to match it up with available inventory. So far, we are receiving just a few of these at a time at wide intervals, so buy now while we have them in stock!
