First published in 1881, the New Method by Czech bassist and teacher Franz Simandl is certainly the most-referenced double bass method book of all time. The author systematically lays out a progression of fingering, and introduces intervals, bowing patterns, and ornaments, concluding the volume with a number of major orchestral excerpts. Book 1, although it does start with whole notes and open strings, covers a massive amount of material - well into advanced technique - in the neck positions. Book 2 (see separate listing) contains exercises in thumb position, harmonics, and double stops; though these are separate categories, it doesn't appear as though the intention is to complete Book 1 before proceeding to Book 2.
