The Concerto No. 2 for Violone by Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf remains one of the most popular classical solo works in the double bass repertoire. Austrian composer August Carl (Karl) Ditters (1739 - 1799) was a close friend of Haydn and a teacher of JB Vanhal. He has left us two violone (bass) concerti and the popular Duetto for viola and violone. All three of these compositions were written in Eb major, but are commonly performed in D. The piece was certainly written for the Viennese Violone, and it's understood that it was a common practice in period to tune the bass up a semi-tone for solo performing, so the composition is published as Eb. It is playable quite aptly in modern 4-string double bass tuning.

This contains both the first and second concertos.

Transcribed for the modern double bass by Rodney Slatford, this edition is in D major, published by Yorke Editions.
